PSU Science Education Degree Programs

University Park

Offered though the Department of Curriculum and Instruction, Penn State University Park offers three different degree options:

Master of Education (M.Ed.)
This program is for those with a bachelor's degree in either science education or a science field. Qualifying majors have the option of pursuing concurrent Pennsylvania teaching certification.

Master of Science (M.S.)
This program is for those with a bachelor's degree in either science education or a science field. The program focuses more heavily on science education research than the M.Ed. program, requiring the completion of a master's thesis. Qualifying majors have the option of pursuing concurrent Pennsylvania teaching certification.

Doctor of Philosophy (Ph.D.)
This program is for educators with teaching experience and science disciplinary training who wish to pursue a Ph.D. in science education. The program is designed to prepare students to be both teachers and researchers and may be suitable for those wishing to become university professors, school district science specialists, curriculum authors, or science program evaluators, among others.

Great Valley: School of Graduate Professional Studies

Penn State Great Valley offers:

Master of Education (M.Ed.)
This program in Curriculum and Instruction with an emphasis on Science Education is for current educators wishing to extend their skills and knowledge in science teaching, science content, and science education research. Most of the courses are offered in the evening and/or online.

Leadership in Elementary Science Teaching Graduate Certificate
This four course certificate for elementary and middle school teachers concentrates on the nature of science, science content, and science teaching. There are no foramal admissions tests or prerequisites to enter the program. Most courses apply towards a master's degree or certification and ACT 48 credit is offered for all courses. Participants have the option of taking the courses in any order and do not have to take all four courses if not completing the certificate.

World Campus

Master of Education (M.Ed.)
Online Master of Education in Earth Sciences offered through Penn State World Campus. This program is designed for secondary science teachers who wish to enrich their practicing knowledge in the field of earth sciences as well as enhancing their teaching and leadership skills.

Master of Education in Curriculum and Instruction - Teacher Leadership (M.Ed.)
This program will be offered through World Campus and is currently being redesigned to match the needs of today's K-12 professionals. Applications are not being accepted at this time. Check back in early 2011 regarding program availability.
