June 3, 2006-Growing and Preparing Indigenous Foods in School Gardens

Description:
Meet at the Center for Sustainability and we will transport everyone to the Penn State Food Labs to prepare fresh, healthy foods using indigenous culinary techniques and easy inexpensive recipes appropriate for classroom nutrition lessons. Later in the day we will return to The Center for Sustainability to work in the gardens with hands-on, inquiry based activities. Learn how to create a school garden using a variety of plants and gardening techniques. Dress for work in a farming environment and bring your rain gear (no umbrellas). Program flyer (pdf, 111kb).

What participants can expect from this workshop:

  • Free breakfast and lunch, some of which you will prepare
  • Hands-on, inquiry-based activities in a food lab and farming environment
  • Resource packet with recipes, activities, and instructions on planning a school garden

April 29, 2006-Wetlands Education at Millbrook Marsh Nature Center*

Description:
Be prepared to interact with nature in this workshop. Spend the day, rain or shine, actually working in the marsh environment investigating the types of wetlands, the animal habitats, plant life, and the environmental importance of wetlands. Teachers will participate in activities with discussions on adapting activities for the classroom setting. So wear your outdoor clothing, bring raingear (jackets, no umbrellas) and you will be prepared for experiencing the exciting world of the wetlands. Saturday, February 11, 2006 - Integrated Pest Management

Description:
Integrated Pest Management is an ecological approach to pest management that helps suppress pest populations while reducing negative environmental impacts. Using IPM requires knowledge of pest biology, life cycles, ecology as well as how to choose from a variety of tactics for least-toxic management. Program Flyer (pdf, 117kb).

Participants will learn the details of integrated pest management and explore the requirements within PA Science and Technology Standards and the Environment and Ecology Standards. Participants will learn about a wide range of activities and investigations to use in the classroom and will address key IPM concepts with an emphasis on integration into pre-existing curricula.
Each inservice teacher will receive:

  • Lists of websites and other relevant information

Saturday, January 14, 2006- " Contemporary Energy Technologies"

Description:
This engaging workshop offers grade 5-8 teachers knowledge and tools to teach contemporary energy technologies using hands-on activities in the classroom. Topics that we'll cover include photosynthesis, fossil fuels, fuel refinery operation, internal combustion engines, batteries, fuel cells, and solar energy powered vehicles. Teachers will receive materials to support a number of activities, including:

  • Zinc and copper strips, alligator clips, volt meter (for lemon battery experiment)
  • 3D piston activity and paper piston activity
  • Solar car
  • Fuel cell cars
  • Forms that you can send to the Society of Automotive Engineers for free SAE Challenge Kits: Earth Toy Designs, Motorized Vehicles, Gliders, and Electricity & Electronics

Saturday, November 12, 2005 - " NASA's Living with a Star and the Real Reasons for the Seasons"

Presented by Dr. Christopher Palma, Outreach Fellow, Dept. of Astronomy, Eberly College of Science and Angela Phelps, Assistant Director for K-12 Programs, NASA's PA Space Grant Consortium. Description: 
Why do we have seasons?  How does the Sun-Earth connection impact the seasons?  And what about the tilt of the Earth?  Activities from the GEMS guide "Real Reasons for the Seasons" and NASA's educator guide "Living with a Star" will be demonstrated.   Learn how to make a sundial to use in your classroom.  Come prepared to ask those questions that you have always been afraid to ask!  Activities are aligned with the Pennsylvania Science and Technology Standards and the newly released Assessment Anchors.

Thursday, October 27, 2005 - "Human Genetic Variation and Chemicals, the Environment, and You"

Description:
Come join us in a workshop presented by one of our very own teachers, Barbara Houtz, a teacher at Bellefonte Middle School, who is the Albert Einstein Distinguished Educator of 2005-2006 at the National Institute of Health. Barbara will present the information and activities included in two of the 12 NIH curriculum supplements: Human Genetic Variation (High School) and Chemicals, the Environment, and You (Middle School). This workshop will be a combination of lecture and hands-on inquiry-based activities from the supplements, which have been field tested in many schools nationwide. Program flyer (pdf, 56kb).

Description:
Investigate the IPM use of herbs, how to identify & prepare nutritious foods, how to integrate multicultural history of herbs into science lessons, and how to augment lessons using a variety of resources. Make and take herbal IPM samples to use in the classroom.
