Saturday, March 3, 2007 and Saturday, March 24, 2007 - Investigating Sound and Light

Description:
What makes a rainbow?  Why when I mix all my paints together do they look black?  Why does an ambulance siren change pitch when it goes by?  Sound and light are fascinating topics that pique the curiosity of children and adults alike, and are all around us.   These topics also comprise a major portion of the PA physical science standards for grades K-7, and relate directly to a multitude of other standards.  Investigating Sound and Light is a two part Saturday Science Workshop designed to deepen your understanding of these topics in ways that will help you teach them using Classroom Inquiry.  We will approach our study through the big idea of Energy Transfer by Waves to understand why sound and light behave the way they do and how concepts related to these two topics interconnect.  All activities use easily accessible materials and can be adapted for use in the elementary or middle school classroom. Program Flyer (pdf, 108kb).

Saturday, January 13, 2007 & Saturday, February 10, 2007 - GLOBE (Global Learning and Observations to Benefit the Environment)

Description:
Come learn how to engage your students in NASA's GLOBE program. GLOBE (Global Learning and Observations to Benefit the Environment) is an international environmental science and education partnership. Join a worldwide network of primary and secondary schools taking environmental measurements at or near their schools, sharing their observations via the GLOBE database, using online tools to create graphs and maps to analyze their own data as well as data from schools around the world. As members of the GLOBE community you and your students will have many opportunities to participate in student/teacher/scientist collaborations through field campaigns and research projects. GLOBE program website: http://www.globe.gov
Program Flyer (pdf, 38kb).

Saturday, December 2, 2006 - Introduction to Physical and Chemical Reactions "Potions - The Science of Chemistry"

Description:
Join us as we delve into the fascinating world of chemistry.  Learn several concepts of chemistry for young minds using scientific inquiry with hands-on activities.  Apply this knowledge of chemistry by exploring some of the many types of polymers, their uses and properties, through the building of models and other activities.  Program Flyer (pdf, 191kb)

Saturday, October 7, 2006 - " NASA's Living with a Star and the Real Reasons for the Seasons"

Presented by Dr. Christopher Palma, Outreach Fellow, Dept. of Astronomy, Eberly College of Science Continental breakfast and lunch will be provided. The program is limited to 20 participants. Program flyer (pdf, 150kb).

Description:
Why do we have seasons?  How does the Sun-Earth connection impact the seasons?  And what about the tilt of the Earth?  Activities from the GEMS guide "Real Reasons for the Seasons" and NASA's educator guide"Living with a Star" will be demonstrated.   Learn how to make a sundial to use in your classroom.  Come prepared to ask those questions that you have always been afraid to ask!  Activities are aligned with the Pennsylvania Science and Technology Standards and the newly released Assessment Anchors.

Saturday, September 9, 2006 - "SEAS - Bringing Deep-Sea Science to Life in the Classroom"

Description:
Presented by Elizabeth Goehring, Education & Outreach Coordinator, Ridge2000 International Oceanic Research Program, Penn State University. Continental breakfast and lunch will be provided.  The program is limited to 20 participants.  Grade levels: 5-8

Come explore the exotic world of the Mid-Ocean Ridge Environment with the SEAS Web-based program.  Conduct in-class laboratory investigations, compare your data with field data that scientists are collecting at sea, and learn how to submit your students’ analyses online as part of a Student Report Fair.  Learn about current deep-sea research projects related to your students’ investigations and how students can learn science by working alongside the ridge scientists as they investigate the mysteries of this extreme environment.  Activities are aligned with the Pennsylvania Science and Technology Standards
