2007-2008 CSATS Workshops for Teachers

********************************************************************************************

Saturday, April 5, 2008 - "From Local to Extreme Environments"

Description:
In this workshop teachers will visit the depths of the ocean with newly developed activities and investigations that explore how energy transfers between different components of the Earth as a system and also understand patterns of temperature variations in time and space.   All of these newly developed activities and investigations are through the FLEXE Program, From Local to Extreme Environments, where scientific studies of the deep sea can be expanded to other systems, such as the polar, desert, planetary (Mars) regions, etc.  Teachers will be engaged in inquiry-based, hands-on lessons that they can use in their classrooms. Program Flyer (pdf, 48kb).

Saturday, March 1, 2008 - "Independent Laboratory Access for the Blind"

Description:
This workshop will provide information for teachers to enable visually handicapped
students to become independent learners in the laboratory situation. Teachers will
learn how to make the science laboratory become more accessible to the blind
student and to promote the students’ study of objects and their properties. Learn
about inexpensive, easily accessible technologies and equipment developed
specifically for the blind student in the laboratory. Join us in a unique experience as
you will be able to adapt some of these techniques and equipment to use in your
classrooms. This workshop will also provide teachers with information that can be
used to teach sighted students what it is like to be visually impaired. Program Flyer (pdf, 13kb).

Saturday, February 16, 2008- "Using Gels for Teaching about Light "

Description:
Have you ever wondered what happens to light when it goes through different media? Learn how to analyze the phenomena you see when using light and a variety of gels. Practice making different types of gels and using them to study the concepts of light. Participate in developing and conducting science activities that accurately represent the specific concepts and learn how to effectively teach these concepts to your students. This workshop will require you to get your hands into the activities and challenge you to work on solving problems in an inquiry-based format. Program Flyer (pdf, 524kb).

Saturday, January 26, 2008- "Exploring the Fascinating Science of Meterology "

Description:
What is weather? How do meteorologists predict weather? What makes the turbulent weather phenomena? You will learn answers to these questions and many others about the science of weather through inquiry-based, hands-on activities that you will participate in and be able to use in your classroom. Join in the exploration of the fundamentals of the atmosphere. Learn to use the meteorologist’s tools to forecast the weather and gain a more in-depth understanding of weather phenomena, while also correcting the misconceptions many of us have about meteorology.
Program Flyer (pdf, 651kb).

Saturday, November 17, 2007 - " CSI in the Classroom"

Description:
A mystery must be solved and you are part of the forensics team called to aid in the investigation.  You and your team must determine what you can through laboratory tests on organic and inorganic evidence.  The substances may be of unknown origin and your team must make determinations to report to your superiors with your findings.  If this sounds intriguing to you, this workshop will be a most enlightening experience.  Learn the basics of forensic science and conduct experiments in an actual forensics laboratory.  Join us to learn how you can use the basics of forensic science in your classroom. Program Flyer (pdf, 628kb).

Saturday - October 20, 2007 "Pollution Solutions"

Description:
What is behind the water cycle diagram we are so familiar with in textbooks?  What are the consequences of human actions on our environment?  These and other questions will be addressed in this exciting workshop based on inquiry-based hands-on activities that emphasize our impact on earth’s water systems, natural resources, and the role of recycling and waste management in affecting environmental health.  Come join us for what promises to be an enjoyable way to learn more about being responsible environmental stewards. Program Flyer (pdf, 168kb).

Saturday, September 29, 2006- "All About Stars "

Description:
Did you know that there is a very large variety of stars?  Come learn what properties astronomers use to classify stars into various types, how observations of individual stars allow us to determine the lifecycle of a typical star, and how to use your graphing skills to create a diagram that reveals a wealth of information about the stars in our Milky Way Galaxy.  Finally, using Penn State’s “Astro Wall” system, you will fly through a 3D model of the Milky Way to see how the stars in the Galaxy are distributed in space. Program Flyer (pdf, 50kb).
